"How the 'Blogler Took Down Vegas"

Undoubtedly, you've all heard by now that on Wednesday a rumor about Cam Newton being suspended by the NCAA temporarily caused some book makers in Vegas to shut down the Auburn-Georgia game. Well, the person who started this rumor is named Kurt Branch and he runs the website warblogle.com. Also, he was on the drumline with Mr. Orange and me. I find it all extremely fun. But like I told him, if this were the sixties, right now he would be in a basement having his teeth pulled out by Joe Pesci. Anyway, you can read all about it here.

  1. Yeah, I don't buy it. People new about this rumor long before the Blogler did (by long I mean minutes, which is eternity in media time) and trust me, people in Vegas are at least a half day ahead of the media coverage, if not more. This guy is just patting himself on the back and making an "I'm AUsome" blog for his readers.

Bottom line, the line shifted fast, the line got pulled, and it wasn't even pulled from every book either. Some books kept the game open, for the opposite reason others didn't, they didn't have a big shift in the bets they were taking.

Now I know what your thinking, what made the line shift so fast? People had to think it was true that Cam was going to be suspended to take UGA all of the sudden. Meh, not so much. Maybe it aided a little, but for the most part people were going to jump all over that line sooner than later simply b/c of all the mounting pressure that will surely be on Cam tomorrow.

And like I said before, Vegas is quicker than the media. I would be willing to bet (no pun intended) that the game was taken down at least 30 minutes before the Paul Finebaum Tweet Heard Round the World.

  2. The Vegas thing is probably a coincidence but he definitely got the rumor started in the blogosphere. On his show, the misquoted radio host referenced his blog as the one who started it all and called him "a guy living in his mom's basement waiting on meatloaf."
