Today should have a been a great Monday following the beatdown on UGA on Saturday. I couldn't wait to talk some shit to all the UGA fans that I have to work with here in Atlanta. Unfortuntely, I was on the defensive about everything from Cam Newton to Nick Fairley to Trooper Taylor. Of course the Fairley hits were on Sportscenter all day. Finebaum took a break from the Newton talk for a day to discuss Fairley's dirty play. Auburn has been the subject of sports talk radio for a week straight now and not for the reason we would all like. I realize that I'm dealing with a bunch of butthurt UGA fans since their team lost, and Finebaum is, well, Finebaum, but that vast majority of AU news in the last week has not been about our exceptional play on the field. It blows to be so good and have such a good season on the field, and at the same time, have to constantly defend my team and university for action off the field. I love Auburn, so I'm going to defend it when people say my team is full of thugs, but I'm beginning to grow tired of it. I really hope this NCAA stuff is cleared up before the national title game one way or another, but I highly doubt it will be. I will say this: Gene Chizik better be 100% sure that Newton is clean and nothing will come of this investigation, because Auburn fans everywhere (including me) will look like complete jackasses if this blows up in Auburn's face. If Newton is dirty, then I would certainly entertain the idea of dumping Chizik immediately. We will be on probation a long, long time if we are guilty, and I will place the blame at Chizik's feet if he had any knowledge of it. In fact, my vote will be to clean out the entire athletic dept all the way up to Jay Jacobs. Hopefully, nothing will come of this, and Auburn will be cleared soon, but I have this sinking feeling that this isn't going to end well.
I think it's funny that fans go crazy when a DL or LB hits a QB as he throws and drive his ass into the ground and get in his face and talk shit. People eat it up.
ReplyDeleteBut then it happens all game, then all season, and suddenly it becomes dirty. Whats up with that? When it comes to Roughing the Passer, if it's not a foul one time, it's not a foul all game. The one flag he did get was well deserved, but goes to show just how much intensity he is playing with.
Personally, I love it. If the tables were turned (and they have been when Auburn played UNC in a bowl game when they had Julius Peppers)I wouldn't complain about it, I would just go into the game feeling scared for the QB and overall outcome of the game.
I think it is an awesome tactic. You may be able to throw some deep passes early in the game, but eventually you are going to be scared to death of me and start making quick (and hopefully bad) decisions. And I bet the NFL is looking at Fairley's highlights and drooling over his hunger to hit the QB.
As for how the puppies responded to it, I'm not surprised nor offended by it really. 1. They didn't know that Fairley was pushed into Murray's knee. 2. If I suck so bad that my QB is getting manhandled every other play, eventually I'm going to get angry at myself and the rest of the O-Line. Add that in with the fact that they are losing a rather intense rivalry game, it's no surprise they lashed out against Fairley in the only way they could, by having 2 guys hold him down after the play while a third takes cheap shots at him. Did anyone see Trooper and Fairley going crazy while/after the fight was breaking out?
I LOVE IT! BRING ON GMAC! WAR DAMN EAGLE!
Why would Auburn be on probation? The allegations strictly involve only Miss State. All the recruiters even came out and said they had no interaction with Auburn. If something happens to cam i think worst case scenario is he is suspended and all games he played in dont count. But Auburn has done nothing wrong. Newton was declared eligible. NCAA had all the facts prior to Newton ever playing his first game at Auburn. and Auburn has been compliant with everything the NCAA has said. I dont think our school will get in any trouble......it would just fuck our whole season.
ReplyDeletehaving said that I still cant believe how pessismistic everyone is being about this. There has been nothing new in this story. There is still zero evidence. its still just he said she said. While I know many people are some what reasonably concluding that where there is smoke there is fire and probably some kind of shit went down..........that doesnt pass as evidence in the real world. NCAA cant come out and say "we really have a strong premonition that there was wrong doing". They need hard evidence.......i.e a recorded conversation or email or bank account records or something of that nature.
War Smeagle
I don't necessarily think we will get in trouble; I just have a bad feeling about it. The end of the UGA left a bad taste in my mouth, and it made AU look bad. I care about the perception of my univeristy, and I don't want it to be seen as dirty. Obviously, I want to win it all, but I don't want to win it at all costs. I would prefer that people view AU in a favorable light and it bothers me that a lot of America doesn't right now. I guess you can't have it all...
ReplyDeleteNo you cant. I think it pretty normal for the teams that are doing the best to be disliked if you give them the smallest reason to dislike you. Look at any team that wins it all in at any level of sports.........Duke, Bama, Ostate, Celtics, Yankees.....they are all disliked in general for no other reason than that they won alot. This is all true especially for college football because our rankings are so subjective that even if you go on to win it all tons of people want to knock you down a peg and tell you why some other team that you didnt play was better.
ReplyDeleteAs for the UGA game I havent heard any chatter from people outside of UGA calling us dirty. All im hearing is a bunch of people talking about the Cam thing. Which im just hoping will have a specific end date where they come out and say the investigation is over and they found nothing concrete. At which point we can tell the world to go fuck itself.
