"Whenever I find my self growing grim about the mouth..." I reach for a bottle of wine
This 2008 chardonnay is grown right smack in the middle of the Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County, California. The region is mostly known for it's pinot noirs but really good syrahs and chardonnays come out of this region as well.
Melville has a powerful citrus taste and tangy finish. But what I like best about it is that it doesn't exude an overly buttery taste that many American chardonnays are known for. This is because the fermentation is done in French oak, which leaves the wine tasting very fresh. Moreover, this wine illustrates why immediately aerating your wine isn't always the best idea. By letting the wine open up as you drink it you can start to detect more subtle flavors emerging from your glass. In the case of this particular wine, a pleasant taste of pear develops. You will find this wine priced anywhere from $25.00 - $28.00 in most stores and probably in the $50.00 - $60.00 range at restaurants that carry it so, obviously, it isn't an everyday wine. Were our rating system based solely on taste I would give this wine a solid 8 but given that price must be incorporated I will give it a 7.2.

Herman Melville
ReplyDeleteI guess that wasn't too hard to figure out. And in hindsight, the title seems forced. I just really wanted to use a Melville quote. And you can have the bonus points, just know they are worthless.
ReplyDeleteDude, I live for worthless points.
