My stomach was literally in knots just watching that. I said WTF 3 times...because I was sure he was done and then he got onto a smaller ladder!
When the narrator said, "there is no quick way down"...it made me wonder if they do or could wear a parachute? When I went skydiving we jumped from 12K feet and deployed at 5K. Our free fall of 7K feet lasted approximately 50 seconds...so every 3.5 seconds we fell 500 feet. So you would have a good 10 seconds to open your parachute and still be a couple hundred feet off the ground. I don't know?...just thinking out loud. Might very well be a good reason they don't. That is some scary shit...That would take INTENSE concentration!
Separate note: The dude in the video to the right (the "up next" video)...looks like the result of Gary Coleman fucking a monkey.
On the primary comment, people base jump all the time from shorter distances, like 500-750 ft I think, but they do so with parachute in hand. Either way, I think it would be something to consider. I wonder what the % of falls/deaths is for people of this profession.
Wow. I kept getting that empty feeling in my stomach every time he looked down. I bet you could base jump off of that but I doubt it would be better for the workers.
So it appears that tower climbers have the highest Death rate amongst all American jobs (per 100,000 employees) , but overall deaths per year are pretty low. From 2003-2008, only 70 people have died.

ReplyDeleteI would be interested in seeing what the %s are too...but I don't think the "/deaths" was needed in your wording...if you fall, your ass I'd toast!
