This Site Will Be Down For Maintenance

Just kidding. But you may (or may not) have noticed that I'm fucking around a lot with the look of the site. I'm trying out some new templates I have downloaded to see if I can jazz things up a bit around here. Feel free to look around and send me some if you care, or check out these and see if there are any you like:120 Best Free Templates.

Of course I will make no permanent changes w/o a majority agreement, or if anyone has any major disagreement. But please give some suggestions as to what you would like to see. Also, just take a stroll around some other, more 'professional' blogs to get a feel for what is the norm, i.e. white background w/ black text is usually a must on the internet (lest amount of eye strain), and any cool ideas we could manipulate.

Also, Billy, I'm not sure what the site meter you found encompasses, but if you go to the 'Design' link up top where you sign in, you will find a 'Stats' tab that shows all sorts of info. For example: we have had 2423 page visits so far, 298 of which came from a Linux user. Crazy stuff indeed. Anyway, post a link of what you found.

Changes to the blog

You may notice that I changed the template. That was sort of by accident when I was figuring out how to put a site meter on here. You will notice it on the bottom left-hand corner of the blog. If you click on it you will gain access to a summary of the blog's visitors, outlining number of visits, number of page views, duration of viewing, and the viewers location. I really don't care what the template looks like, so if anyone wants to change it back feel free to do so. I now know how to put the meter onto the template so I if you want to change the design, we can easily replace the meter.

Double Stuffed Irony

CNN has a story about a normal family in Iowa that was chosen to host one of President Obama's informal press events. According to the story, they family was chosen because of their picturesque backyard. Nothing about this article is interesting but there is one line that is unintentionally funny. Explaining how the family was preparing for the event:

Jeff moved an old car he was working on out of the garage to make room for the White House press corps to set up shop. The morning of the event, Sandy was looking for a place to hide Mouse, their cat. She settled on her daughter's bedroom.

"I didn't want it running through the president's legs" Sandy said. Their other feline, Oreo, had been boarded earlier in the week.

If anything, Oreo should have a front row seat.

"Buzzard" - A 2nd Listen

Upon further review, the ruling on the blog is overturned. There is indisputable audio evidence that the album is in fact good. The score card will be updated to a 4/5 with a thumbs up.

Seriously though, if you like some good indy rock music, give this a listen. There are some undeniable Radiohead inspired songs thrown in the mix (see "Freak Flight Speed", and "My Baby (Cares for the Animals)").

Someone else's words sum it up nicely:

"Yeah, Margot gave up on their nice little Animal synth-embellished harmonies, but… wow! It was worth it. Each song is beautiful in its own way and the album as a whole, simply put, is pretty much a masterpiece.Buzzard is an album that, in twelve songs, easily describes what indie rock is all about - the sound, the style, the best. Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s really hit the nail on the head with this record. They’ve clearly defined where indie rock is headed and have done a hell of a job doing it."

P.S. Still no stream of this album on the internet, and doesn't appear that there ever will be.

Week 3 Pickem results*******

This is why gambling is a bad career choice! After Roach lit it up last week...going 15-5-1 (I think) he was brought back down to earth...going 8-13. Also, all three of his locks (ones he commented on) were whiffs. I figure I called you out on the good so I would bust your balls for the bad too. Regardless...I you're still leading by a few games.

Dark Lord: 8-13
Heath: 10-11
Billy: 10-11
Mr. Orange: 10-11

And I somehow completely forgot to post mine...Heath mentioned something to me about a drop...but obviously we would all have to agree.

Jeff Bridges and Coen Brothers Strike again...

In a remake of the 1969 movie "True Grit" that starred John Wayne, the Coen brothers use Jeff Bridges as the man with true grit. Josh Brolin from "No Country for Old Men" and fucking Matt Damon also star in the movie.
Side note, if you've been wondering where the hell you've seen that Irish bitch, that is on "Boardwalk Empire," she was in "No Country for Old Men," she was Josh Brolin's wife.
I digress...
The plot is pretty stupid, its about a young girl who wants to track her fathers killer down, but hopefully the Coen Brothers will deliver anyway. The movie is supposed to come out this Christmas.

Free Friday Ear Food...Sam Adams

Sammy Adams came out of no where and climbed to the number one most downloaded album on i-tunes in less than a month. This white, college kid from Boston is living the college dream. He’s rolling through the college circuit banging all the hot chics, meanwhile he probably hasn’t been in a college classroom in over a year.

Sam Adams is smart in the fact that he doesn't think that rap albums are only about rap. Rap albums these days are about good production, catchy hooks, a good chorus, and relating to the masses. That’s just what Sammy does on his first EP “Boston’s Boy.”

The most played song on the EP is “Driving Me Crazy” where Adams combines everything that is clutch for making a pop/rap song, including making the song particularly appealing to females. Another big hit on the release is a remix called “I Hate College,” which is basically an anthem to all college kids everywhere and is one of my favorite songs of his.

Now Sam Adams has released a ‘Mix Tape’ titled “Party Records” that you can listen to and download here.

For those of you that haven’t been keeping up with the rap game, it is changing. Mixed tapes are the new way to promote yourself. Basically it is an album that is thrown together and pumped out. The focus of these albums is mainly to promote the rapper, rather than being a carefully constructed album that was thought through and combed over. You’ll hear more samples from other songs than a typical rap album, since the mixed tapes are done so quickly and are usually free.

If we were still in college this is the shit we would be hearing everywhere.

Feel Good Video from Tosh.0

Dexter: An All American Hero

I started following Showtime's Dexter at the beginning of season 2 back in 2007. After I watched 2 episodes of that season I stayed up till three in the morning for the next two nights watching pirated episodes of the first season.

Dexter is a blood spatter specialist for the Miami PD by day and a serial killer by night... but he only kills people who "fit the code." The show is the great debate of morality and whether it can exist outside the law. It also allows one to see how a real life Super Hero might go about taking care of business.

The acting in the show is pretty top notch and there are some great side characters who keep the show interesting. The are a bunch of twists and turns that you expect from any weekly series, but they try to keep it honest and it hasn't gotten progressively worse year after year like Weeds or Californication where the writer's struggle to come up with new/interesting material.

Dexter is my favorite TV show series of all time and I have purchased each season on DVD. I highly recommend this show to everyone and even though you might not have seen the first 4 seasons its a show that recaps a lot and allows for new watchers to pick up and not feel left out. If you really end up liking it and want to borrow the first couple of seasons feel free. The new season premieres this Sunday September 26th.

I'll buy you a ka-bab

This song has been stuck in my head for two days and goddammit, if I have to think about this song then so do you people

Supa Mutha Fuck'n Harvest Moon

So apparently tonight is the last night of Summer, there will also be a full moon, AND the sun will be setting as the full moon is out which is supposed to make some kinda Super Harvest moon/trippy effect. The last time I caught a cool moon show was the solar eclipse in 2007/2008 and the thing turned completely red, I've actually got a picture that I took of it as my profile pic. So if you guys aren't doing anything around sunset, tevo whatever the hell you are watching and take a step outside for a few minutes.

Desparation

I was in line at the ABC store last night, feeling stressed out but thankful that they were still open. The person in front of me in line was a skinny old man with white hair, a white beard, a solid red oversized t-shirt, jean shorts that were perhaps a little too short, tube socks, and old sneakers. I could tell this old man was pretty hard up when I saw him shaking so badly that he barely managed to count out the $5.80 to pay for his pint of Aristocrat vodka and two Evan Williams miniatures. As I watched him fumble around in his billfold for what seemed like minutes, I glanced down at my bottle of Dewars White Label and couldn't help but think to myself, "I'm spending entirely too much to get drunk on a Tuesday night."

More HBO

To add to Roy's preview of Boardwalk Empire, here are two other shows whose new seasons premiere this Sunday after BE.

Eastbound and Down
First, if you haven't seen an episode of Eastbound and Down, then I highly suggest you check out the first season. This show is hilarious, clever, and guaranteed to deliver at least 5 good quotes an episode. Even the trailor has a few.

Trailer 2

Bored to Death
This is a very underrated show. Ted Danson, Zack Galiphianakis, and Jason Schwartzman all work well together. This show has a great cast and is really well written. If you're not familiar, it is a show about an out of work writer who decides to be a private detective in his spare time.

First Listen: Margot and the Nuclear So and So's - Buzzard

If you have ever heard an album by Margot, then you will know they are fond of the orchestral pop sound. Their rich, textured sound and smooth lyrics are inevitably what brought them to the forefront of the indie music scene, and landed them gigs like playing Late Night w/ Conan. Their 2nd album, Animal, reminded me that good, original rock/pop music that anyone could enjoy listening to was still alive and well. Two years later they released their 3rd studio album, Buzzard. But this isn't Margot and the Nuclear So and So's; at least not the one I remembered.

You be the judge.

Sir Charles actually talks some sense

Charles Barkley thinks Reggie Bush shouldn't have given the Heisman Trophy back. He knows Bush received improper benefits in college. Which makes him no different than . . .

Charles Barkley.

Barkley admits he took money from agents in college

I have to agree with Barkley here. Some of these kids come from nothing and do need some getting around money and a flat stipend across the board might make sense, but mama showing up in a new escalade to your next game is going a little far.

Great Expectations

I touched on this a little Saturday night, before the drunkfest began. Auburn fan's expectations are too high. War Blog Eagle had a good write-up on this yesterday. Here is a snippet:

"So we live in a near-constant state of disappointment with our football team, and on those rare occasions when they actually exceed our expectations–as Auburn did in the five games to begin 2009–our response isn’t to be thankful for those performances and wait patiently for the other shoe to drop, it’s to immediately readjust our expectations to make those performances the new baseline … and then scream bloody murder when the team doesn’t measure up to it."

No truer a statement has been said about Auburn fans. Read the rest here.

HBO's Boardwalk Empire premieres this Sunday and it's gonna be the best thing since the Saprano's. HBO has consistently knocked series shows out of the park. See Band of Brothers, Soprano's, and yes even fucking True Blood(they show enough titties in that show to make the worst actors look ok). My point being is that this show is going to be pretty awesome. Martin Scorsese, yes THE Martin Scorsese, King of Gangster Movies, Directs and Steve Buscemi stars as a crooked town treasurer who has his hands in everything, and if he doesn't somebody...somewheres that is involved in that something is going to get whacked!

***Michael Dyer to start***

Per Justin Hokenson, AuburnSports.com
**Note on Michael Dyer...
Sources indicate that Dyer has been running with the first team during practice this week, and it's very possible that Dyer is the starting running back come Saturday.Obviously Malzahn runs so many offensive formations that we don't know what he will come out in, but I expect the coaches to give Dyer his chance to be the man this Saturday

Coffee Crusted Pork Tenderloins

As some of you may know, I have been really into grilling and trying new recipes since I got my gas grill about this time last year. Well, I wanted to try something different with pork, and here is what I found over at Barbeque University (http://www.bbqu.net/). This is a show that comes on PBS and has some great grilling recipes. This recipe is for Coffee Crusted Pork Tenderloins. The link to the recipe is here. Essentially, it is a coffee based rub and covered with a "red eye barbeque sauce." The sauce, like the tenderloins is heavily flavored with coffee. If you don't like coffee, then you might still like the recipe, because the coffee adds a distinct flavor, but mixes really well in the bbq sauce. I have never eaten nor made a sauce or rub based on coffee. Both were really good, but the bbq sauce was excellent. I was really surprised with how it came out. I would recommend just making the sauce if you're not about making the tenderloins. The sauce would go great with any pork dish I think, but really work well with the tenderloins as called for in the recipe. The sauce had a certain "kick" that must come from the coffee, paprika, and onions coming together. Along with the tenderloins was a side of corn on the cobb. The corn was shucked, rubbed with butter, rolled in foil, and grilled. After I took the corn off the grill, I sliced a lime and squeezed it all over the corn. I then sprinkled seasoned salt. The lime juice makes the salt stick to the corn. The sweet and spicy corn played really well with the spicy-ness of the pork and bbq sauce.

More pictures of my handy-work and my rating after the jump.

Jets and Ravens

This game is gonna be intense! The jets have been doing some major shit talking all off season and now Ray Lewis decided to talk back: "If they (the Jets) are the Miami Heat then we got to be the Lakers!" "I hope they can cash the checks that their coach keeps writing" Good stuff...its gonna be a really hard hitting game.

Dr. Lou

Dr. Lou (Holtz) stops by JOX Birmingham to break down the Boise St. and VT game. Do yourself a favor and check this out!

Nuts and bolts

I am not very familiar with blogsp0t...I tried to figure out how to change the settings so that whenever a thread gets a new comment that thread will move to the top of the list. Helps keep the convo going...anyone know how we might do that?

Ines Sainz is a reporter for TV Azteca and was doing an interview with Mark Sanchez after Jets practice. Apparently she received a few cat calls and some other unwanted attention....IM SHOCKED! look at this chick!

The first article just outlines what happened and the official actions being taken:

This article has her response and what she was wearing on the sidelines at practice....God damn! that ass don't stop!

There are A TON of pictures (I thoroughly investigated this) of her on the sidelines of events dressed to purposely draw attention to her (amazing) body ....Honestly the only reason she is in a position to be a sideline reporter is because of her looks (Miss Spain) ay yaya. Now I'm sure the Jets were acting like...well the way guys act in a locker room! (not excusing it but if I were there I might have humped the bitches leg!). She constantly begs people to pay attention to her based on her body (I would rub some bar b que sauce on that ass and then beat it up!) and what she wears....it shouldn't be a surprise or a big deal when she gets it. In closing...I would cut off my pinky toe just to smell her hair!

FU Non-AQ

And just like that...the discussion about Boise State was over.
NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND!!!

Good Article on NCAA

Per our discussion about Reggie Bush and the arbitrary nature of the NCAA and college athletics in general. This is a great piece by Matt Zemek at collegefootballnews.com. The first half of the piece has to with last weekends football games. Scroll down to the bottom and start reading "Athletic Directors: Crimes and Varying Degrees of Punishment." The article talks about the Damon Evans situation at UGA, but goes into issues at Louisville, UConn, and USCw. In my opinion the most interesting part of the article is when Zemek refers to UConn AD Jeff Hathaway. Apparently, the UConn bball program is under investigation for as many as 8 NCAA violations. After getting accused of these violations, the NCAA made Hathaway the Chairman of the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. It is a good read and a solid addition to the Reggie Bush debate.

Cleans Your Balls!

Is it right to take Reggie Bush's Heisman Trophy?

Check out this Joe Posnanski article at SI.com. He makes some good points about the realities of college football. While most of us would like to believe in the narrative that these athletes only play for school pride, the reality is there is a good bit of money involved and, eventually, some of it is going to get to the standout athletes. He tell's this story to justify his opinion that Reggie Bush should keep the 2005 Heisman Trophy. According to Posnanski, the award goes to the "most outstanding college football player," not the purest, most ethical one. I certainly understand his point, but if we want to go by the letter of the law, the award goes to the most outstanding eligible college football player. To me, that is all the justification you need to take Bush's Heisman way. Yes, he was good. Yes, he was one of the best players to ever play. But he wasn't eligible.

ESPN NFL fantasy football

Is anyone interested in starting a league on ESPN? We could try and get enough people for a private league or if we dont have enough we can do a public one and let randoms fill in the empty spots. Its free. Also if your interested we need to pick a time that is good for everyone or most everyone for the live draft. Also the season starts Sunday so we have to get on it.

Non-AQ FU

Well, all those hoping the Boise State issue would be moot after last night had their hopes dashed. Forget about their easy schedule. The point is they looked pretty good. They played a quality opponent - though not an exceptional one - and finished strong. I'm not saying they could go undefeated in the SEC but I think they could play with anyone. What do you guys think? I'm sick of hearing "they don't play any quality opponents" and "they are in a weak conference." Well, they try to schedule as many quality opponents as they can. Obviously, a lot of the BCS schools are too scared to play them. And it isn't like you can just join any conference you want. You have to be invited and I didn't see one invitation to Boise outside of the Mountain West Conference.

I deplore the BCS, as I hope all of you do. And the only way to get rid of it is for total chaos and a championship game that no one thinks is legitimate. So, that is what I'm hoping for.

Nomination of other exceptional 'citizenz'

I think that we should consider inviting some more people to join the blog...What do you guys think? I definately want it to remain a relatively small circle...but having some more members would probably keep the convo going.

Chapin, Jones, Finley would be three people I would like to invite??

Thoughts and other people we should invite?

Opinions: Au VS Arkansas State

A couple of observations to start the conversation:
1. Newton was impressive. Even if you were confident in him before the first game, you have to feel like he exceeded expectations. He had over three hundred yards of offense by himself. He had slightly more passing yards (186) than running (171). I'd like to see that tilt a little more toward passing, but I'm not gonna be too picky about his first ever performance as a D1 starting QB.

2. Dyer is the real deal. He will be our starting tailback before the end of September. The only thing holding him back is pass blocking. Fannin will have to move to F or H Back. He is much more dangerous receiving than running since he still has issues with fumbling out of the backfield.

3. The D was pretty terrible in the first half, but had a solid second half. You have to remember that Ark. State had ten minutes more time of possession than Auburn. The D is going to give up yards when they are on the field that much. That said, I hope there is major improvement from game 1 to game 2, because MSU's offense will be much better than Ark. State.

4. Penalties: The number of penalties was still higher than I would like it to be. We are improving in this area, but we still get too many.

5. Overall, this game has not changed my opinion about how we will fare this year. I still think a 10 win season is very much a possibility with 9 being acceptable and 11 being an awesome season.

Your thoughts???

USCe???

USCe might be known for more than fights and underachieving this year.

Is anyone else worried about this game after watching USCe stomp Southern Miss last night? I honestly thought they would be this year's Ole Miss based on the fact that they always fall on their faces and Spurrier's criticisms of Steven Garcia. They were impressive last night. The D was solid, Lattimore was good, and Garcia was on fire the whole night. Granted, they were playing Southern Miss, but they certainly did not play down to their level. I figured they would beat Southern Miss, but I thought it would be close until the 4th quarter. I could not have been more wrong. That could be the best performance in the SEC all weekend. I am more than a little worried about this matchup based on what I saw last night.

Auburn vs. Mississippi State

Anyone up for a Thursday night trip to Starkville?

I've Crossed Over to Complete Nerdom

No joke guys, I've gone 100 percent over to the nerdside. I'm obsessed with the PC Real-Time Strategy game Starcraft II. The proof, just watch this video:
Yeah, that's right, I love this shit. I mean, I thought that Terran player was going to get totally pwned by those Void Rays, but he never gave up and left it all on the field. When the day was done, he kicked that Protoss player's ass.

Auburn Funk band!

So this cat that was in AU band with Billy and me invited me to see their band this Friday night at the Bank vault. The band is comprised of 4 Berkley College of Music grads and Chris Deason of Auburn University, so it goes without saying that they all know how to play their instruments. I want be in Auburn this weekend so I will be unable to catch them. I will definitely be going out of my way to see these cats at one point this year.

I'm mainly glad to see that Auburn still has the funk. They have some tracks that were recorded at one of their live shows, so it gives you a good sense of how they sound live.
Check em out and hopefully we'll get to see them at some point this year.
They mainly play the Friday's before a game but they are play a couple of Saturdays.
They even have a few dates in Bham. Anywho check em out.
The bassist is solid as shit, and the drummer has some pretty sick chops.
