College Pick 'EM - Week 13

The results from last week are in and it looks like it is going down to the last week. The point standings so far: Billy -59*
Roach - 57*
Roy and Heath - 54*

*Note this is without the lowest score drops. The differentials are the same as w/ the drops, except for it bumps Heath up 4 points to be tied w/ Roy. I have used the drop system now several times (in my poker tournament series and now this) and I'm convinced now that it sucks. In the long run, it's more exciting to not drop points, as the drops ALWAYS screws the person who is consistent.

So its anyones ballgame. Here is the last full week of picks. Be sure to pick them before Turkey day.

Free Sunday Ear Food

Heres a good one that you may or may not have already heard of. It comes from a one man show named "Girl Talk". He is young guy about our age who has had a couple albums already out but you cant download them on itunes because his music is technically illegal to sell (you can buy it on amazon.com though.) He just came out with a new cd though and it is pretty damn good.

He essentially takes samples (without permission) from other songs and blends them together to make a new song. on average he takes about 15 different songs that you would never think to blend together and makes a nice little toe tapper out of them. His music is good background music at a wild party or orgy.

The whole new cd is available for free download at http://www.illegal-art.net/allday/

UPDATE
For those of you who are at work and can't download stuff

A Hypothetical Situation

Let's, for the sake of an argument, say that Cam Newton is, after winning the Heisman and national championship of course, found to be ineligible by the NCAA investigation. Auburn is stripped of their awards and told to be more careful in recruiting in the future. So Gene Chizik moves into the offseason, and into the new recruiting season. Let's say he takes on a "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice....well that's strike three" mentality and decides that all communications, phone calls, voice mails, text messages, emails, letters, etc., are going to be recorded and filed away in order to cover their ass in any future investigation.

And because other schools and coaches in the country fear the same thing happening to them, decide to do the same in their recruiting from now on.

Jump to October 2011. Kiehl Frazier (yeah, he spells it like that) is Auburn's starting QB and en route to win the Heisman as a freshman!

Free Friday Ear Food - The XX

Busy day at work today, so not much  time to sift the internet for some free tunes. Instead, I will use a band recommended to me by fellow blogger, His Eminence. I held back using them for the simple fact that they only have 7 songs on their myspace page, and I like for you guys to have the ability to hear the entire album, if not their entire discography. But in this case, their debut album only has 11 songs, so its a rather large sample of their sound in retrospect. I bought their album this week, and rather enjoyed it. It sounds like something you would hear in a coffee house in a back alley in West London. And as His Eminence so romantically put, it's a great band to fuck to.

I like them, His Eminence likes them, even Thom Yorke likes them (and you will soon hear why). Ladies and gentleman, I give you, The XX.

Compilation of Allegations

http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/messagetopic.asp?p=22778676
Here is a link to a blog that sort of compiles all the allegations against Auburn into one comprehensive thing that was just emailed to me. I'm not claiming that it's gospel, I just thought you all might be interested if you haven't already seen this.

Is Auburn the Most Hated Team in College Football?

Today should have a been a great Monday following the beatdown on UGA on Saturday. I couldn't wait to talk some shit to all the UGA fans that I have to work with here in Atlanta. Unfortuntely, I was on the defensive about everything from Cam Newton to Nick Fairley to Trooper Taylor. Of course the Fairley hits were on Sportscenter all day. Finebaum took a break from the Newton talk for a day to discuss Fairley's dirty play. Auburn has been the subject of sports talk radio for a week straight now and not for the reason we would all like. I realize that I'm dealing with a bunch of butthurt UGA fans since their team lost, and Finebaum is, well, Finebaum, but that vast majority of AU news in the last week has not been about our exceptional play on the field. It blows to be so good and have such a good season on the field, and at the same time, have to constantly defend my team and university for action off the field. I love Auburn, so I'm going to defend it when people say my team is full of thugs, but I'm beginning to grow tired of it. I really hope this NCAA stuff is cleared up before the national title game one way or another, but I highly doubt it will be. I will say this: Gene Chizik better be 100% sure that Newton is clean and nothing will come of this investigation, because Auburn fans everywhere (including me) will look like complete jackasses if this blows up in Auburn's face. If Newton is dirty, then I would certainly entertain the idea of dumping Chizik immediately. We will be on probation a long, long time if we are guilty, and I will place the blame at Chizik's feet if he had any knowledge of it. In fact, my vote will be to clean out the entire athletic dept all the way up to Jay Jacobs. Hopefully, nothing will come of this, and Auburn will be cleared soon, but I have this sinking feeling that this isn't going to end well.

Pick 'Em Results

If you picked all home teams ATS last week, you went 8 for 10.

Overall a pretty bad week here on the COP blog.

Billy, Heath, and Roy all hit 5 wins, and I got 3!

The standings: Billy inched forward this week with 42 total points, Roy with 41, me at 39, and Heath at 35. This includes lowest score dropped.  For those of you interested in what the points would be without the drops, here they are:

Roy 54, Billy 52, me and Heath at 49.

"How the 'Blogler Took Down Vegas"

Undoubtedly, you've all heard by now that on Wednesday a rumor about Cam Newton being suspended by the NCAA temporarily caused some book makers in Vegas to shut down the Auburn-Georgia game. Well, the person who started this rumor is named Kurt Branch and he runs the website warblogle.com. Also, he was on the drumline with Mr. Orange and me. I find it all extremely fun. But like I told him, if this were the sixties, right now he would be in a basement having his teeth pulled out by Joe Pesci. Anyway, you can read all about it here.

Some Good News to Break the Cam-cycle

Radiohead guitarist extraordinaire Johny Greenwood told Rollingstone yesterday that the new album was finished recording and they are deciding on the track listing and how to release it. AND they plan on following the release w/ a "BIG TOUR". Usually this stuff holds as much water as a Camallegation, but radiohead's website has been updated with a new look by their favorite album artwork artist Stanley Donwood, who is actually pictured on the website w/ Thom Yorke working on presumably the new album artwork, which shouts to the heavens that they are actually about ready to release some new tunes.

The only thing that deters my believing is the fact that Radiohead has released albums exclusively in the months of October and June dating back to 1997. But that is probably a mute point. (Yes I know it's 'moot', it's a stab at you Billy)

UPDATE:

DOH! Damn Eye-tal yens.

Johnny Greenwood:
"I think this italian writer (referred to here) has, either through over-enthusiasm, or frustration at all my non-committal answers, mistranslated me a little….in fact we haven’t quite finished the album – in the studio at the moment – nor have we yet considered any touring. The plan is to have no plan until the record is finished….hope that’s a little clearer!"

College Pick 'EM - Week 11

Alright boys here they are:

A few quick thoughts on the lines.
1. When will the line makers STOP giving Alabama so much credit. I mean, the Dawgs have some obvious talent on the D side of the ball, and we saw how G-Mac looked last week, and yet they still think they can put up the points? I don't get it.
2. At least Auburn is finally getting a line better than 7 against Ole Miss, but still the same people that think Bama's offense can beat State by 14 doesn't think Auburn can beat a 5-5 team by more than 9? I think its obvious they underestimate Newton's rage he is going to unleash on the UGA D.
3. Ole Miss vs Tenn, NOT Vandy vs Kentucky, holds the crown of being the battle of the bottom for the SEC. I find this amusing, and wish Heckathorn was still around to badger.

Make of This What you Will

Found this nugget online just now:

While admitting the information comes to him second-hand—essentially a trusted source of a trusted source—Grandmaster Sports Handicapper Joe Duffy, CEO of OffshoreInsiders.com, the top sports betting site in the world says that the Cam Newton investigation has turned up serious smoking guns to the point where an Auburn compliance officer has said that the Tigers need to cut ties now.

Predicted Duffy, “From everything I’ve been told, I doubt if Newton makes it to the Iron Bowl.”

Of course, all the more reliable sourced website like ESPN, CBS, etc. say the opposite.

10 Facts about Newton

Thursday, November 4, 2010

We might as well talk about it...

Breaking news...Auburn will be called a cheater for the rest of the season! According to this, there were some mighty shady dealings going on for one Cameron Newton. Now this only involves MSU right now, but you know the real focus has to be on Auburn. My thoughts:
1. Ugh...Of course some shit like this would come out when AU has the wind at its back and is making national headlines as the number 2 team in the BCS. It doesn't help with the background that Newton already has. I realize the computer thing is way overplayed, but it is still talked about by all those that hate Auburn. My general response up to this point has always been something like "Look the kid left UF, spent a year in the middle of nowhere playing JUCO ball, came to AU, and won the respect of the coaches, players, and fans. He hasn't been any problem since and has been a leader of the team and in the community. Give the kid a break. You're just jealous of AU's success and if that's all you have to say, then I will note your jealousy and smile everytime you bring it up." This just becomes a little more fuel for the Cam haters out there. No one will deny that they had reservations about this kid coming to AU when they first read up on him. I'm hopeful that nothing will come of this, but you can't help but worry given the previous issues he has had.
2. Here is why I'm hopeful: he is still playing. So AU has known about this for quite a while now, yet Cam has been eligible the whole season. I don't think they would take a gamble on the kid and the program by playing him if they were afraid he'd by ruled ineligible. Also, based on the fact that our NCAA compliance office is apparently the most hardass department in the country, surely they wouldn't let this one get by them. Last year we couldn't even get a bball player who was ruled eligible by the NCAA into Auburn because of these guys.
3. What is the deal with the timing of all this? Why was this story broken with AU at 9-0 about to face our two biggest rivals? There is something strange about this whole story, including the timing of its release. I can't help but think it was more than coincidence.
4. Even if nothing comes of all this, it is NEVER good for the NCAA to be snooping around your program. Lets hope nothing else comes up during this investigation.
Fellow Citizens, what are your thoughts???

UPDATE
The following was reported by Jeffrey Lee, the moderator on the Auburn Rivals site:

I've spoken to two very trusted sources on the situation, and both said the following are facts:

* Florida coach Urban Myer, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen and former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond had a telephone conversation recently to discuss the allegations.

* Meyer had an interest in this story getting out and encouraged Bond to do so.

* Mullen told the two he thought they should move on, let it go, regardless of what was being alleged. Meyer said no, that it needed to get out to the media.

* Kenny Rogers, who is alleged to have sought money, is a desperate individual that was trying to get Cam Newton to go to Mississippi State. Rogers has a checkered past that includes an ongoing investigation by the NFL.
That sneaky little bastard. I was indifferent about Meyer until this...

MGMT Concert

I saw MGMT at the Tabernacle in Atlanta last night. Let me save you some hard earned time and money: DO NOT SEE MGMT IN CONCERT! This show made me want to take a nap, which is the last thing I'm looking for at an Indie rock concert. The band seemed sort of half interested and completely disappointed. The only highlights were when they played Kids, Electric Feel, and Time to Pretend. Unfortunately, it wasn't because of MGMT. These were the three songs the crowd got into and energy came from the crowd, not the band. I thought I might have been disappointed because I wasn't familiar with more than about 7 or 8 songs, but then I remembered that I absolutely loved Arcade Fire and I had never heard any of their songs prior to seeing them live. If MGMT comes to a city near you, do yourself a favor: go to a bar with an internet juke box and pick these three songs to listen to. If it is a hip enough bar, then you might as well have seen them live and you only had to pay the $5 for three songs.

AUr man Damon Duval Playing Rugby....or Something

Electioneering

It's election day and as usual, if you believe what you hear, the decisions you make within the next 24 hours will either lead to eternal life or damnation. It's a great day to turn on the TV listen to the news and marvel with detached amusement at how stained the gene pool is.

This election feels different for me though. And I'm not just referring to the heightened polarization between the two parties. I'm referring to how this election is being conducted. This is the first election where there is no limit on how much broadcasting money a corporation can contribute to a campaign. This explains the unbelievable amount of shit smearing you have seen on tv and heard on the radio. It's nauseating. I'm gonna put it out there that high school student government campaigns across the country are ran with far more class, reasonableness and intelligence than almost any state race in the U.S. The sad reason for this is because it works. Shit smearing, no matter how true or false works. It will make you lose faith in humanity.

Take Democrat Alan Grayson from Florida into consideration. Look at this ad he ran against Daniel Webster where he edits a speech from Daniel Webster to 100% convey the opposite intended meaning:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu3DAlwD5oc
Webster was giving a speech about how people should not literally interpret verse's from the bible particularly the ones about how wives should submit to the their husbands. And Grayson just leaves that little part out of the Ad.

Here is one from Republican David Vitter in New Orleans running against Charlie Melancon.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8UEtDJSb7M
It's just flat out insulting your intelligence.

The way in which our campaigns are ran is one the biggest fundamental flaws in our system. A simple analogy:
Say little Timmy is gonna run for class president against Sally at Bayside High. In order to run though you have to have money to pay for campaigning and let people know you are running. Sally runs a lemonade stand and raises $40 dollars. Timmy on the hand is friends with Assblaster Mcgee who is the richest kid in school and also captain of the wrestling team. Assblaster Mcgee tells Timmy he will give him $500 dollars because he believes Timmy is the shit. Timmy paints the entire school with ads about how he will personally organize every one's Sega Genesis cartridges if he is elected. Sally on the other hand can do little more than post a couple flyer's. Timmy wins by a landslide and as his first order of business as president is to decide between getting new textbooks for all the students or new wrestling gear for the wrestling team. The students need the new textbooks but Timmy is clearly in debt to the help Assblaster Mcgee gave him during election and must base his decision not on what is good but what is in the best interest of his presidency.

It seems so obvious campaign financing needs to be limited, otherwise elections can be bought not won. I'm watching every ones ads today and just going down the line voting for the person with the most civil one. It seems stupid to not take the actual issues into account but I've been doing that for 8 years and it has been less than productive. Maybe voting for politicians by using a rubric that determines who has the highest baseline intelligence and can behave like an adult will lead to a better run government.
